Situation 5: At two wind farm sites

Windfarming Ltd. have begun the construction work for the first wind turbine. Tim Saunders, a civil engineer, talks to George Cox, the landowner. George is complaining that a digger has damaged one of his drainage channels.
Tim questions George about the details and agrees to investigate.
George then asks if his nephew, Sam Cox, an aspiring engineer, can visit an operational windfarm site.
The scene shifts to the control room of a working wind farm. Jeremy Adams, an electrical engineer, explains the operation to Sam Cox. Sam asks many questions about the things he does not understand.

The following notes will help you get the most from this situation.
Think about these questions: What happens when you have to deal with an aggressive person?
- Do you want to show them who is the boss?
- Do you also get aggressive and try to fight fire with fire?
- Do you appear to give in and then stab them in the back?
- Do you remain in control in a difficult situation?
Imagine you are in a factory and a colleague accuses you angrily of not doing your job properly. You know that you have. How do you stand back a bit from the situation and remain calm?
- Count to ten slowly to yourself.
- Turn your back and walk away.
- Try to find out exactly what they are getting at and why.
- Stand your ground and look the other person in the eye.
- Ask them to come back later when they have calmed down.
- Start asserting very loudly what you have done and how they are wrong.
In the first part of situation 5 you will see how an aggressive person might be dealt with.

What happens when you are trying to understand an explanation?
- Do you listen to the whole explanation even though you are getting lost?
- Are you willing to admit that you have not understood something?
- How do you check that you have understood?
Imagine someone is instructing you how to operate a machine. How do you react when you do not understand everything?
- Wait until instruction is over and ask questions.
- Ask for specific details at the time.
- At the end try to go through the steps to check your understanding.
- Ask the instructor to repeat when you have not understood.
- Refer to the manual or another colleague.
- Try it out for yourself and ask for help when you need it.
In the second part of situation 5 you will observe how to ask for information during an explanation and how to make sure you have really understood.
